Beat the Heat with a Frozen Treat!

By: Katrina Morales; Udi’s Employee and Author of Gluten Free Gidget

Whether you are in the northeast or the southwest, this summer has been a scorcher!

When you break a sweat walking from your front door to your car, it should tell you something. Summer temperatures take away my appetite for big meals, in favor of crisp, refreshing salads and icy smoothies.

Smoothies are an excellent vehicle for packing a huge nutritional punch into one, delicious and refreshing, meal. Incorporate frozen, organic berries for antioxidants, chia seeds for healthy fats, and gluten-free oats for fiber. Green Smoothies, are my particular favorite!

So, what makes a Smoothie a Green Smoothie?

It is the addition of one or more leafy green vegetables! Greens can range from Spinach or Kale to Swiss Chard or Beet Greens. Whatever you have on hand can be tossed into your blender for an added nutritional boost. For those Green Smoothie newbies out there, I recommend starting with spinach. Of all the “greens”, Spinach has the most innocuous flavor.

Here are a few of my favorite Green Smoothie recipes. To preface, not all Green Smoothies are green in color. Sometimes they are purple, brown, or even red!

Our smoothies aren’t “measured”… Use what I have on hand, but they almost always have:
    Baby spinach or kale
    1/2 a green apple (or 1/2 c applesauce)
    Frozen banana & blueberries
    Either frozen pineapple or mango
    2 tsp of flax meal
    Plain or vanilla yogurt
Splash of apple juice to help blend more quickly
    (My kids love them!)

These all look good! Which blender is giving the best results for smoothing the mixture out? Have been looking at the NutriBullet.

  3. Lois Bragg says:

I enjoy a smoothie almost every night. I use about 3/4 C frozen strawberries, 3/4 C milk and a tablespoon of strawberry or rhubarb jam. A dash of cinnamon and into my Magic Bullet.

    Oups: was it good?

    Could we use frozen spinach?
If someone tried it, what it good?

These sound healthy and simple, especially when we are so busy and the day goes by quickly! Thanks! Also, more fiber in the smoothies can help with weight loss when we need it and maintenance, everything in moderation, is the key!
